Ethiopian Airlines to Buy 80% Passenger Foods, Drinks from Local Producers - ENA
Ethiopian Airlines disclosed that it is working to purchase 80 percent of the foods and drinks it caters to passengers from local producers.
The bulk of drinks and foods the airline served to more than 45,000 of its passengers daily has been purchased from abroad, it was learned.
Ethiopian Airlines CEO, Tewolde Gebremariam, told ENA that the airline has already achieved 10 percent of its target in purchasing foods and drinks to passengers from local produces at this early stage of its plan.
The target of the airline is to purchase 80 percent of its needs from local producers and import 20 percent, he stated.
“The airline has established farmers cooperatives that supply quality products which meet international standards and the demand of Ethiopian in cooperation with Ministry of Industry, according to the CEO.
The scheme will create jobs, save foreign currency and boost the role of the airline, in addition to making it profitable, he added.
Among the cooperatives that provide supplies for Ethiopian Airlines are Lome-Adama and Meki-Batu farmer’s cooperatives.
Ethiopian Airlines reportedly expends 10 million US dollars annually for foods and drinks it provides for its passengers.
